It doesn't mean you can't find good fabric elsewhere, but Italian fabrics have a recognizable quality that's hard to replicate.

Every pattern has a fabric requirement chart, it's tied to fabric width (138–150 cm) and your size. Look for it on the first page or the envelope.

If you're sewing without a pattern, here are the basics:

• Trousers - trouser length + waistband + pockets and details. Add 20–30 cm if the fabric has a print.
• Skirt - skirt length. For bias cut or a full circle skirt, take two lengths plus details. Add 20–30 cm for a print.
• Dress - length from neck + sleeve length + details + 20–30 cm for pattern matching. If the skirt is full, see above.
• Jacket or coat - length from neck + sleeve length + details + 20–30 cm for pattern matching.

Yes, and this isn't just a tip. Natural fabrics (cotton, linen, viscose) shrink after the first wash, sometimes up to 5–7%. If you cut first and wash the finished garment later, it will come out smaller. Wash it the way you plan to wash the finished piece: same temperature, same cycle. At minimum, steam it: spritz with water and press with an iron. Be careful with silk, it can stain or crease permanently.
